Using the Therapy Ball

Yesterday we started talking about using a therapy ball to help with low back pain. Today we are going to discuss how to begin using the ball.

When you first begin to use the therapy ball it may seem awkward and uncomfortable. It is normal to feel this way. Your body has to adjust to a new position. You will have to find your balance. When you first start using the ball it is often recommended you just sit on the ball for fifteen to thirty minutes. Focus on balancing yourself on the ball while bouncing lightly.

You are going to find a neutral lumber spine position. Your looking for the center of gravity in your body. This refers to the upper body being balanced on a stable pelvic base. A slight change in movement will shift the center of gravity and make it hard to remain balanced. You will be using your stomach muscles the entire time you are on the therapy ball to remain balanced. Consult your chiropractor for more details on how to use the therapy ball.

Once you have learned to balance on the therapy ball you will be ready to begin using it for exercise. We will go into more details about exercise you can do with the therapy ball tomorrow.

It took me awhile to get used to sitting on the ball. It is harder than it looked to balance.

I think I was afraid of the ball at first. Once I used it a few times I became comfortable. Now I couldn't live without it.
